“When I visited coffee farms in Ethiopia, the farmers could not believe we spend a week's wages in their country on a cup of coffee in ours….”

Colin Firth

Often by putting a thought into a sentence and then creating a second sentence with the position of the verb and adjective switched we get a message of wisdom.

Take for instance the quote, “The duty of the church is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”, attributed to Michael Ramsey.

“to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable” has also been used to describe the duty of a newspaper and to be the job of good fiction. It was also used as the title of a song by the punk group Dead to Me.

Can you think of other examples?
One for “the presence of the congregation” may be fun.

The devil's finest trick is to persuade you that he does not exist.

Charles Baudelaire

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So I’ve made some emoticons for church, perhaps you can think of more?.

“If God has made us in his image, we have certainly returned the compliment”.

Francois-Marie Arouet (Voltaire) Le Sottisier xxxii

“I am He whom I love, and He whom I love is I:
We are two spirits dwelling in one body.
If thou seest me, thou seest Him,
And if thou seest Him, thou seest us both.”

Husayn ibn Mansur (al-Hallaj) quoted in Nicholson, The Mystics of Islam
